On colloquialism


An Indian kid brought up on a strict diet of Queen’s English with a dollop of RK Narayan and a spot of Ruskin Bond, will be forgiven, if, after hearing

“Don’t blame ma ass for gettin’ your ass banged up in the joint”

he/she believes the conversation was being carried out by poorly educated non-native speakers of English, about gastric woes.

Boy, that’s a long sentence, considering that I was always told to deliver sentences in small bite-sized pieces, but then again if I had listened to and heeded everything taught in classrooms I wouldn’t have been reduced to writing in blogs now, would I?
